Knowing Me, Knowing You brings together sculpture, film and drawing to explore the relationship between farm animals and the industrial systems that surround them. Through processes of measuring, recording and transforming animal bodies, the work inhabits the entangled space between care and constraint, intimacy and industrialisation, devotion and consumption. It considers how animals are shaped by systems of production, asking what it means to know a body?
Bringing together the anatomical and the mechanical, Gendall imagines bodies swallowed and transformed by machines. Organic matter becomes a technological form, rudimentary breeding technology becomes infrastructure, karaoke classics become cries for help. Across the works, familiar gestures of care are entangled with the structures through which animal bodies are regulated, reproduced and made available for consumption.
Across the exhibition, Gendall invites us to consider the complexities of human - animal relationships, and how care, control and consumption might co exist within the same gesture. What does it mean to know a body, and what remains when that body is no longer there?
