We’re proud to reflect on a partnership that brought creativity, connection, and care to our local community: Mindful Movement, a six-week pilot project designed to support socially isolated adults experiencing mental health challenges in the South Hams area.
The project was delivered through a partnership between local NHS mental health teams, social prescribers, and creative practitioners. Participants were referred through GP practices and supported throughout the programme by a warm, welcoming team.
The sessions were thoughtfully led by professional movement artist and educator Charlie Eaton, Director of Inner Motion Movement, and produced by Ashanti Hare, our Assistant Producer. Together, they created a nurturing, accessible space where participants could explore mindful movement in a way that honoured each individual’s pace and experience.
Each 2.5-hour session began with a gentle “landing” period—an invitation to pause, enjoy a cup of tea, connect with others, and journal about the theme of the day. These themes helped participants reflect on how they were feeling, their week so far, and how the movement activities might offer space for self-expression.
From there, Charlie guided the group through accessible movement practices rooted in creativity, playfulness, and presence. Journaling and group sharing helped weave personal insight into the physical experience, while participants were encouraged to explore the space, move freely, and connect with one another in ways that felt natural and safe.
Sessions closed with a “check-in” to reflect on how participants were feeling post-movement and how they might carry that experience into their daily lives.
Out of 10 initial sign-ups, 6 participants completed the full programme, with only a few absences due to prior commitments. What emerged was a truly supportive group—one that celebrated each person’s voice, pace, and journey.
By the end of the six weeks, participants shared that the sessions had supported them in building confidence, improving communication, and connecting to both their creativity and their bodies in new, empowering ways.
We’re deeply thankful to our partners—NHS mental health teams, social prescribers, and our inspiring facilitators—for making this project possible. And most importantly, to the participants: thank you for your openness, your trust, and your presence. You made this space what it was.
Here’s what some of the participants had to say:
'These sessions have everything I need. Journaling and crafts, socialising and exercise.'
'These sessions have sort of been a lantern in the dark...'
'This is such a safe, friendly space. It’s something I look forward to each week.'
'This has really helped me in opening up and has been so positive.'
'I’ve really enjoyed coming to these sessions and meeting new people.
