Plymouth & Devon Racial Equality Council believes that to build a fair and just society, everyone must have an equal chance to live, work, and learn free from prejudice, discrimination, and racism. The organisation values diversity and works in partnership with individuals and organisations who share a commitment to race equality.

Recently, a women’s group supported by the Council took part in two creative morning workshops led by artist Ashanti Hare. The group meets weekly and is made up exclusively of women from diverse backgrounds who live and work in and around the Plymouth area. The workshops were designed to connect with The Fullness Between Shadows, the exhibition currently showing at Harbour House, creating a meaningful link between the participants’ creative work and the wider cultural programme.

Across two two-hour sessions, participants explored creative activities loosely based around mask-making and embroidery. With a wide range of materials and resources available, women were encouraged to follow their own ideas, dip in and out of different processes, and take their work in whatever direction felt right for them.

The first session was attended by seven participants and was marked by a strong sense of openness and connection. Throughout the morning, women shared stories, chatted easily, and exchanged ideas about their creative projects. The atmosphere was warm and collaborative, with a clear feeling of togetherness and friendship. Several participants were already familiar with Ashanti from previous workshops, helping to create a welcoming and relaxed environment for everyone involved.

The second session saw the group grow to twelve participants. Many women continued with projects they had started previously, while others chose to begin something new on the day. Once again, the workshop was filled with conversation, laughter, and storytelling, with participants feeling comfortable to share their experiences both with one another and with the facilitators.

Participant feedback highlighted the workshops’ positive impact, with reflections such as:

“This is the best time to spend in the week. I wish we could have more time or another day. Thank you.”

“Grateful for the safe and non-judgemental space.”

Across both sessions, engagement was high and the workshops provided a supportive, creative space where women could connect, express themselves, and build relationships. The relaxed and inclusive atmosphere reflected the values at the heart of Plymouth & Devon Racial Equality Council’s work — celebrating diversity, fostering belonging, and creating opportunities for meaningful participation.
