Our exhibition has been designed with a liberatingly novel approach. Over the last year we have explored new ideas and challenged ourselves creatively. Visitors to the gallery will not only be able to see our exciting collection of artwork exhibited, they will also experience the feeling that they are walking through the pages of an open art book.
Previous visitors to Cherry and Wendy’s exhibitions at Harbour House will be familiar with the convivial atmosphere they create in the gallery, usually at work at easel or table and always willing to discuss techniques and materials. Local artists may also have come across workshops and art society demonstrations with the artists. Keen for visitors to see how their paintings are actually made, the artists will display sketchbooks and mood boards alongside step-by-step instructions for selected exhibits. An illustrated booklet will be available for sale in the exhibition, to include method descriptions, step-by-step images and a materials list.
Our 2020 exhibition will host a diversity of styles from both artists and focus on a carefully selected range of subject matter. Displaying variety in media choices that contribute to each artist’s individuality, in turn, will form a fascinating and powerful exhibition.
Wendy Chudley is inspired by the local environment and paints in the studio from her plein air sketches, notes and memories. She was the 2015 winner of the ‘New Fresh Artist’ competition held by Mayne Gallery of Kingsbridge, and exhibits regularly across the South West.
Getting outside is good for my soul. When looking for inspiration I need look no further than the ever-changing skies or the continuous movement of the sea. The southwest has both in abundance so, armed with my sketchbook and watercolours, I venture out in all weathers to carefully observe how the natural light reacts with nature to produce stunning scenery. Sometimes my inspiration can be fuelled by light falling on an old stone wall, an animal grazing or the vividness of wild flowers in the countryside; there will always be something to motivate me.
Cherry Lyons is an experimental and adventurous artist who works confidently across a range of disciplines, including watercolours, acrylics, oils, pastels, printmaking and, most recently, the ancient art of encaustic wax. She is particularly inspired to respond to the ever changing light and climatic conditions when painting outdoors, rain or shine. Cherry has exhibited widely and has taken part in the televised Sky Landscape Artist of the Year competition in 2015, 2016 and 2018. She has also been a finalist for the Devon Life Landscape Painter of the Year award. As well as being a member of several art groups Cherry is Vice President of Devon Art Society.
