I have been running workshops at Harbour House for over ten years and as a result I have formed very strong connections with many students. Some of them have been with me from the very beginning and have been an integral part of my own development as an artist. You find out how much you understand about a subject as well as how confident you are by teaching it. The students will have seen my work change and develop over the years as much as I have seen them progress. To see them all grow as artists has been a privilege.

As part of each workshop day I invent warm-up exercises to get the creative juices flowing. Coming straight into a studio and expecting to produce good work immediately is like asking an athlete to run a marathon with no stretching first!

In recent years these warm-ups have become collaborative mainly to prevent individuals from being scared of failure, but also to present artists with marks and colours that they might not usually make or choose when working alone.

The ultimate aim for me, as mentor, was to encourage new ways of making images. However, an unexpected outcome has been the accumulation of a series of amazing paintings and drawings and I feel they deserve to be shown to a wider audience in the Harbour House Gallery.

These artworks represent a group of people who work together, support each other and are enjoying the rollercoaster ride that is life as an artist. Our exhibition will be rather like a choir concert: on show will be harmonious pieces made up of many artistic voices, together with some solo offerings from individual members of the group.
